Description

Inter-American Studies/Estudios Interamericanos 11

This interdisciplinary collection of essays deals with the interface between gender and nation in the Americas and the ways in which the discourse of gender and the discourse of nation have been entangled from the rise of nationalism in the 18th and early 19th century to the present. Twenty-one contributions address the intersection of gender and nation discourses in five sections including foundational narrations of nation, gender-based violence as a constitutive factor of nation building and the experiences of women in war, the representation of women in national literary canons and their struggles for inclusion therein, gendered configurations of space, and gender and transnationalism in film. The collection takes as a regional focus the American hemisphere and forms part of the emergent field of inter-American studies. It presents the outcome of a long lasting dialogue between scholars from Mexico, the United States, the Netherlands, and Germany.
